Former Super Eagles assistant coach, Kelechi Emeteole has
emphasised that Super Eagles must adopt new attacking and defensive options in
other to beat South Africa
Sunday and do well in the competition. He described as ‘unsatisfactory’, the
team’s two game run at the African Nations Championship in South Africa which
has set the country disadvantaged in the group save they grab an emphatic win
against the host nation. “I said to myself that is not our team because they
gave away the ball too soon to opponents and looked shy in front of goal. Their
play and attitude was a deviation from that we have seen in recent times,” he
said, adding, while the Mozambicans were tall a good aerially, our players
still took an attitude that kept the ball in the air and that gave the opponents
the advantage most of the time.”
The Eagles handed away a 2-1 loss to Mali in an opening day group tie but recovered
to a resounding 4-2 win over Mozambique
on Wednesday to stay a point behind South Africa
and Mali
both having four points a piece.
Emeteole, who spoke on telephone, told SaturdayVanguard
Sports “players still have a chance to do more on pitch to make the competition
a success. “We must have the ability to switch attack into defense into the
attack to make greater impact. First, since the ball is weapon, deny your
opponents of it by keeping possession. Then, instead of kicking out the ball
when the opponents are on the offensive which they recover and return
attacking, we should have an ability to absolve the shocking attacks but
utilizing it to advantage by quickly attacking when they least expect it. More
than that, I was never comfortable the way they wasted scoring chances against Mali and Mozambique, so players must strive
to score goals because goals make the game tick. If they can score goals it
does not matter it’s South
Africa we have next but we can beat them as
we did in past encounters,” he stated.
