Don’t compel Eagles to win CHAN- Ukeachu

*Efe Ambrose

Former Spartans of Owerri captain, Tony Ukeachu has said  that Nigerians are pushing the Super Eagles to the brink by asking them to win the Orange African Championship in South Africa in less than a year of winning the African Cup of Nations. Speaking in a telephone chat Ukeachu opined that rather than compel the team to win CHAN, coach Stephen Keshi rather should be encouraged to use the competition as last trial platform for home based players to play themselves to reckoning before the World cup in Brazil. Keshi has performed beyond his mandate by winning the Nations Cup and qualifying Nigeria for the World cup in June, he reminded all, he said,  “ adding put together, Keshis’  record as Togo and Mali coach, we must can also ask him to build for the future with the much younger ones” Although Eagles are ready in South Africa waiting for CHAN third edition, the former Enyimba, Iwuanyanwu Nationale and Udoji United coach prayed that empasis should be on grooming under seventeen players ready for the Eagles. “I think that we should be moved away from hammering on winning CHAN to that of allowing Keshi use the competition to let more home based players graduate into the Eagles team proper. I was a bit disappointed that more of the under 17 Golden Eaglet were not giving opportunity. At least that would afford Keshi build for the future with the younger ones. In other-words, players whose ages I would enjoy a situation where doors are shut on players already same age with the likes of Oboabona, Ideye and the rest to allow those who would continue after the world cup come on board. That way, we can secure the future now.”
