| *2002: Scolari hailed by players |
Brazil head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has poured scorn on suggestions that the World Cup hosts may bow to expectation when hosting this summer's showpiece event and instead insisted that the pressure to succeed in the tournament can propel them on to an unprecedented sixth global triumph.
Speaking at a World Cup workshop for coaches in Florianapolis, Scolari said: "It helps us win. Fans, they help us win.Fans are important."
"We are playing at home, something like that makes a difference. We have a squad that is competitive and of high quality."
"And having this togerhter with the fans, we can always be the best. Because of this, I'm completely confident that we can get to the final and become champions."
The man they call Felipao has already tasted World Cup success after he masterminded a Brazilian triumph in 2002, their fifth and last success in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Scolari has said the upcoming World Cup will be wide open in terms of potential victors, according to host nation head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. Speaking at a coaches' workshop in the city of Florianapolis, 'Big Phil' suggested that there are several teams capable of taking home the trophy and hinted that one or two countries could spring surprises at this summer's tournament.
"I don't think we're going to have three favourites for the title," Scolari told reporters at the workshop, "Today, there are at least eight squads that can fight for the title. Now, one of those favourites is us. Everybody knows it."
"And players, we have really good players (coming to the tournament) that we already know. Like Cristiano, Messi, Neymar and others."
"There are a few young players that come here, like a few players from Belgium that are on the global market, big players that could surprise us."
"Colombia has a few players that could also be a surprise."
