Merseysiders confident
Roberto Martinez claims his aim
was always to get Everton competing for the top four since taking over
the job at the beginning of the season.
“It was a hell of a challenge,” Martinez said.
The Toffees can reclaim fourth with a win or draw against Crystal Palace on Thursday morning (EST).
“But
it has always been my vision that Everton would fight for Champions
League football - because of the history, the heritage and everything we
have as a club we should be challenging for Champions League.”
Pellegrini discounts Reds’ English influence
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini says Liverpool’s British nucleus didn’t help the Reds defeat his side on the weekend.
The Chilean manager says Brendan Rodgers’ side benefited from the rub of the green.
I don’t think that (British players) is why Liverpool won,” Pellegrini said.
“We beat Liverpool here at the Etihad with the same team.
“In this last game there were three or four important
decisions which went against our team. That was not because they had
English players.”
Luis Suarez was lucky not to be sent off on two
occasions at Anfield – once for a simulation and another for kicking the
ball away, while Reds defender Martin Skrtel looked to have handled the
ball in his own box late on.
Pellegrini and his troops can beg back Liverpool in the race to the title when they host Sunderland on hursday morning.
Why can’t we be friends?
This is the shocking
image of the damage inflicted on Port Vale captain Doug Loft’s face
following a training ground bust-up with teammate Daniel Jones.
Vale have sacked defender Jones and Loft has now been ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken cheekbone.
The incident happened on Thursday last week and neither player featured in the 4-2 defeat by Notts County.
Vale boss Micky Adams and senior club management have been fully supportive of Loft and plan to hold an internal investigation.
But
the club have already decided to sack 27-year-old Jones who has a year
remaining on his current dealt - captain Loft is contracted until the
end of the season.
