Nigerian Chinenye Ogwumike, Selected As First Overall Pick In the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) 2014 Draft

 Chinenye Ogwumike, a 6-foot-4 Nigerian-American basketball player has been selected as first overall pick by the Connecticut Sun in the 2014 Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) draft. The WNBA is a women's professional basketball league in the United States.
Chinenye is following in the footsteps of her elder sister Nneka, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks two years ago.
Chinenye also led the Stanford University Cardinals to a 33-4 record this season and its sixth Final Four in seven years. She was also the Pac-12 Player and Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season and the 2014 recipient of the John R. Wooden Award (the highest honour in College Basketball in the USA).
During her career at Stanford University, Chinenye had an impressive record. She is the fifth Stanford player to reach 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds and her career rebounding total puts her fifth-all time at the NCAA level, and her 967 points scored during the 2013-14 season is the sixth-highest single-season total in NCAA history.
The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) sent congratulatory messages to Chinenye saying, "The NBBF is particularly excited with the huge interest both Chinenye and Nneka have in helping to develop especially women's basketball in Nigeria for which discussions opened when Chinenye was in Nigeria for her internship last year."
