Diver feared for safety after slipping on 10m platform
MELISSA Wu feared for her safety
after slipping on the 10m platform and losing control in a shock opening
dive at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday.
Rookie Lara Tarvit produced a promising final to finish in fourth
position of the women’s 10m platform final, but the biggest shock was
reserved for Wu’s first dive failure that left the 22-year-old shaken
and on the verge of tears.Wu’s foot slipped on the platform as she launched into a forward three and a half somersault and luckily she had the composure to break from her spin to land feet first in the water.
Wu said afterwards she feared she would hurt herself as she’d lost all bearings in the 10m plunge to the water below.
“That was lucky, I didn’t know where I was. The last time I slipped on the platform I didn’t land straight so I’m just glad I didn’t hurt myself today,” Wu said.
“It is really scary and you panic in the air and that’s why I don’t remember thinking, I just came out and my body automatically came out.
“It was just lucky I was on my feet.
“It was a bit of a shock really, my foot slipped on the platform and I didn’t get into my rotation properly and I just got really lost and yeah ended up coming out.
“I’ve slipped on the platform once before quite a few years ago (2007) and hurt myself a lot worse that time so I’m just glad I didn’t do anything too bad injury wise and I was able to continue diving.“Luckily I didn’t hurt myself too bad or anything.”
