Nigerian Premier league highest goal scorer, Mfon Udoh of
Enyimba has been singled out as one player good enough to be called up to the
national team because his striking skills would help solve the Super Eagles
scoring problem especially in the current 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
According to Ex-international Evans Uzokwe, coach Stephen Keshi should look
towards the Enyimba striker for possible call up to the national team because Mfon,
who has set a new season record of 21 goals would make an impact if given the
chance, “he is a player with wonders on his legs, he will go places if given a
chance.” he stated. It will be recalled that Mfom recently broke the record of
the most goals scored in a league season held by Jude Aneke when he found the
net in Enyimba’s 1-1 draw against Dolphins of Port Harcourt. The feat earned
him praise from team mates and club officials though the score-line ran short
of the clubs target of an outright win in the bid to catch up with leaders
Pillars.
Uzokwe who played for Niger Tornadoes and defunct Spartans
of Owerri said though he would love to see Mfon join the Super Eagles attack,
he has however expressed doubts that the Eagles can qualify for the 2015 AFCON. “Eagles have an outside chance of
qualifying for the Cup of Nations final because Congo, not South Africa will try to present the stiffest obstacle when we
take them on at home in their place,” he said.
In another development, Uzokwe, who rose to the position of Head
of Service Imo State after a successful football career, has congratulated Kano
Pillars FC for winning the Nigerian Premier League back to back.
He praised coach Okey Emordi, , for steering Pillars to yet another successful
season. Pillars, who won the title in 2013, have only recently been confirmed
champions for 2014 after finishing the season with 65 points ahead of Enyimba
of Aba who finished with 61 points while Warri Wolves placed third with
60points.The league has just a game to conclude the season.
He heaped praise on the former CAF Champions League winner
with Enyimba not for fun but as one he knew from close range. Uzokwe and
Emordi’ were team mates at the defunct P and T Vasco Da Ga Ma FC Enugu. So,
posited that Pillars could only have achieved the feat as the side was more
organized than others and had a coach with experience and vision. “I believe
they won the title again because Emordi knew the tricks of the game and club management
was focused. “More than that, I am also calling on the club management to ensure
they constitute a strong side able to carry the nation’s flag well in the CAF
Champions League come next year. I believe that if they can get on it the same
they did with the league, the sky will be their limit.”
