MADISON Keys will have to become the first woman since Kim Clijsters in 2009 to defeat Venus and Serena Williams in the same Grand Slam to reach this year’s Australian Open final.
It’s kind of fitting for the 19-year-old tennis sensation, because her career has been linked to the champion sisters from Florida from the start.
Keys only began playing tennis as a four-year-old after she saw Venus at Wimbledon on TV and liked the way she looked in her traditional white dress.
On Wednesday — 15 years later — Keys shocked Venus in the quarters at this year’s Australian Open, winning 6-3 4-6 6-4.
“The moment is definitely sweeter by being able to play Venus,” Keys said.
“It’s amazing, you just have to embrace the moment. Now I get to enjoy another moment next round.”
Up next is, of course, Serena, who Keys has the rare distinction of having beaten as a 14-year-old in a World Team Tennis Match in 2009.
Even though the WTT isn’t taken as seriously as a WTA match, there’s no doubt the victory would have given Keys the confidence she could one day join Williams as a grand slam contender.
“I think she destroyed me,” Serena said this week.
“I just remember her hitting forehand winners, she was hitting so hard. She was so good at that age. It’s good to see her still doing well.”
Regardless of the result Keys will now leave Australia as the third-ranked American on the women’s tour, behind Serena and Venus.
She’s also guaranteed at least $650,000 in prizemoney — and has already decided on how she’s going to spend it.
“I’m pretty good with my money,” she said.
“I told myself if I make second week, I’ll go out and by a Louis Vuitton bag, which I will be doing. I think the rest will just go in my account.”
