Nigeria today confronts Ivory Coast in a final group game of the
on-going African Youth Championship in Senergal and experts have already
branded the game a payback time as it was same Ivory Coast that denied
Nieria a sip from the trophy in the final of the last Africa U-17 in
Niger days back. They won via penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Strikingly
both countries are parading the majority of players whofeatured at the
last U-17 level but while Nigeria has reached the semi final after two
straight victories and a berth in theWorld Cup finals in New Zealand
later in the year, the Ivoriens are under presure to win beat Nigeria or
miss being in New Zealand.
Nigeria's coach Maanu Garba
anticipates the match this way. “Cote d’Ivoire will likely sit back in
defence and hope to catch us on the counter, but we will be ready for
them,” Manu Said.
“People have spoken of revenge, but we are not interested in that. We
just want to keep on winning our matches because if we win all our
games in Senegal, we will be champions.”
“We are focused on winning our final match against Cote d’Ivoire even though we have already won the group,” added Ezeh, saying;
“It won’t be an easy match particularly after what happened at the U-17 level.
“We respect them, but don’t fear them and we will win.”
