Louis van Gaal restores Manchester United to the Champions League on Tuesday night admitting he does not know whether his team is good enough to challenge Europe's elite.
Having missed out on European football last season following the disastrous reign of David Moyes in the 2013-14 campaign, United visit Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven in Group B after completing a 7-1 aggregate victory against Club Brugge in the two-legged play-off round last month.
United, the three-time European champions, are expected to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League this season after being drawn with PSV, Wolfsburg and CSKA Moscow - both runners-up in their domestic leagues last term - in their group.
However, despite spending more than £280 million on new players, including the PSV winger Memphis Depay, since taking charge of United in July 2014, van Gaal has claimed he has yet to discover whether his team is equipped to compete with the cream of the Champions League.
"I think the fans shall see a Manchester United who fight for their chances, but we have to show on the pitch if we are able to win matches on the highest level," van Gaal said. "That is a challenge for us now.
"Last year we were fourth in the Premier League and qualified ourselves for the Champions League, which was our aim. But now, we have to show if we are able to play at that level and that I don't know. I have to wait and see. I think the Champions League is a higher podium than the Premier League, but maybe it's not like that."
United face PSV without Wayne Rooney, the captain, who is still unavailable as a result of the hamstring injury, which forced him to miss the 3-1 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday.
