Emotional game, football. Especially in Brazil. The beauty, the majesty, the artistry - the firearms.
A
referee in an amateur game in Brumadinho, in Brazil's southeast, will
undergo a psychological assessment - and potentially be allowed to
continue as a match official - after not only packing heat for the fiery
contest, but actually pulling out the piece, he claimed, in
self-defence
The ref, Gabriel Murta, who is a policeman in his
regular day-job, was
reportedly kicked and punched by a player from Amantes da Bola, one of
the teams involved.
Clearly disinterested in humouring the player's tantrum, Murta hit
back in sensational style, liberating his little friend and looking as
though he was actually going to use it.
Thankfully, some semblance
of sanity prevailed, courtesy of a very courageous linesman, who very
delicately diffused the situation.
Gun crime is an enormous
problem in Brazil, which will host the Olympic Games next year. A report
by the United Nations and Brazilian government found that around 42,000
people were killed by guns in the country in 2012, the highest number
in 35 years.
