The Champions Liga

CLEAN SWEEP OF SPANISH VICTORIES ON UCL DAY 1
Spanish teams are getting plaudits here, there and everywhere right now and their continental dominance was plain for all to see on the opening day of this season's Champions League. So far the record reads three games played by the La Liga sides, three victories. Barcelona and Valencia will hope to make it five from five against Roma and Zenit respectively.
This is the first time ever that five teams from the same country have made it through to the group stage of Europe's top club competition. We are certainly witnessing a purple patch for La Liga's finest. Indeed, of this quintet, three have featured in the final in the last two years. Furthermore, four of the ten finalists in the last five years - almost half - hailed from Spain.
Things could not have gone better for the La Liga armada on the first day. Between them, Real Madrid, Atlético and Sevilla racked up nine goals and didn't have to pick the ball out of their own net once.
