| *Mata is Set for the exit |
As the January transfer window prepares to slam shut in our
gossip-hungry faces, it looks like we could be on the verge of some late
big-money deals that might actually happen. Maybe.
WHAT'S THE MATA?
It's on. Juan Mata will leave Chelsea for Manchester United
for a fee somewhere in the region of a whopping $65 million.
Sky Sports reports that talks between the two clubs are
'going well', with Spanish football expert Guillem Balague saying everyone
wants the deal to go through - but the right deal has to be struck.
"Chelsea are asking for Pound35m ($65m) or with Wayne
Rooney as part of the deal. Manchester United have said no to the money and no
to Rooney - but I am under the impression that a deal will be reached because
it benefits everybody," he said.
"Manchester United need quality, Mata needs to get out
of the situation he is in, and it would reinforce United for their meetings
with (Chelsea's title rivals) Manchester City and Arsenal, which is clever from
Jose Mourinho."
Oof! Now that's the kind of transfer talk we like! Big
money! And The Mirror says Mata's move could just be the first of a mighty
$130m Man Utd spending spree.
Also on his shopping list is Newcastle's $35m-rated
midfielder Yohan Cabaye (also rumoured to be up for a move to Paris-Saint
Germain), 30-year-old Bayern Munich defender Dante, a relative snip at $13m,
and 22-year-old Borussia Monchengladbach winger Patrick Herrmann for $16m.
But in bad news for Moyes, The Sun reports that Wayne Rooney
will refuse a new deal with United, regardless of whether the Mata deal goes
through, and will wait until the end of the season to see how the club is set.
WENGER'S COUNTING
DRAX
Remember on Tuesday when we were going on about all the
money Arsene Wenger has to spend? Well, we were right - and according to The
Sun, he's about to throw a load of it one of Europe's hottest young talents.
Schalke's highly rated midfielder Julian Draxler has been
linked with all the big EPL clubs in recent weeks but Wenger is reported to be
ready to offer $35m-off plus a suitcase full of Lucas Podolski for the
20-year-old German.
ROUND-UP
The Guardian reckons Paris Saint-Germain is ready to annoy
the heck out of Manchester United by offering Juventus $110m for the one Alex
Ferguson let get away, Paul Pogba.
Forget all buying a new player - Barcelona are going all-out
just to keep the best one they've got. The Sun reports the Catalans are set to
offer Lionel Messi almost $70m a year to make the Argentine wonder the
highest-paid player in the world. That's $70m a year. $70m. A. Year.
Etienne Capoue has accused Tottenham of jeopardising his
proposed move to Napoli by asking too much for him. The $16.5m-Frenchman only
moved to White Hart Lane at the start of this season but Spurs are ready to
offload him as they look to cull their huge squad from the Andre Villas-Boas
era.
