Set on lifter Nigeria’s image high 0n the world stage,
fourteen para-powerlifters have been increased activity in an open camp
training at the National Stadium in Lagos ahead of the World Championships
scheduled to take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from April 5 to 11. The
eight and six female’s athletes say they are “hell- bent on making it another
golden outing for the country and themselves as the event serves as one of
qualifiers for the Paralympics Games. A coach of the Para-powerlifting
Federation, Areh Feyisetan said in an interview that he for now supervises
schedule of special training for the fourteen athletes because they live and
reside in Lagos
with him. “The federation is still expected to call an enlarged closed camp
that will involve athletes from other states, whose performance level merit
inclusion in a world championship contingent. It is also my very strong belief
that those in other states have been training on to be in top shape their own
or under the watchful eyes of their state coaches in the knowledge that
participation in a national camp is to enable the best be picked to go to the
world stage,” he stated.
A run down of those involved in the open camp shows a mix of
new and old including Commonwealth Games and Paralympics Games medalists like females-Lucy
Ejike, 61 kg performer and Lovelyn Obiji, an 86 kg class lifter with
Jegede Adesakan, an 88kg lifer in the male category. Other athletes in training
