Arsene Wenger was breathing a sigh
of relief after Arsenal navigated a win in its potential banana skin
fixture against West Ham on Wednesday morning.Strikers Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud scored as the Gunners leapfrogged Everton into the all-important fourth spot on the ladder.
“It was a hard-fought win, but a very, very important one,” Arsene Wenger said.
“It improves the confidence of the team and we have one advantage; the picture is very clear in front of us.
Giroud – who has recently come under fire for allegations of extramarital affairs – paid tribute to the 96 lives lost at Hillsborough, by kissing his black armband.
“I didn’t know exactly the story. I heard a few days ago and I was really sensitive to it,’ The French striker said after the match.
“’I just wanted to pay homage to them - dedicate my goal to them and so it was normal for me to think of their families.”
