Nasiru Mohammed, the technical director, Fives Federation of
Nigeria, has disclosed that inadequate facilities stalled rapid the growth of
the sport at the grassroots.
Mohammed, who made this known in an interview with the News
Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos,
noted that many athletes willing to take to the sport had been discouraged by
lack of access to facilities to develop their skills.
“Fives are an outdoor games and schools should be provided
halls with boards, rackets and enough balls that coaches can use to train
budding players,’’ he said.
According to him, such problems can be addressed with
support from parents of wards by donating equipment to school authorities.
“It is an opportunity for parents to contribute their quota
towards the development of Fives in the country at the grassroots; this will
improve the skills of their wards,’’ Mohammed said.
The technical director said some of the players who took
part in previous championships organised in the state were poorly kitted which,
he noted, did not promote the sport.
“The appearance of well-dressed athletes goes a long way in
boosting their confidence to compete favourably with their opponents’’, he
observed.
He urged the authorities to organise suitable competitions
where parents would be invited to come and watch their wards.
Mohammed said this would further encourage them to be
committed towards the development of the sport.
