Vicente
del Bosque is well aware that David de Gea is the perfect replacement in La
Roja's goal. He first joined the Spain squad in the U17 category in
2007 and now the time has come for him to share a dressing room with the first
team. In the youth categories he won a European U17 and two European U21s.
The Spain
coach is totally convinced. Of the 30 players on his preliminary squad for the
World Cup 2014, 3 are goalkeepers: Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina and David de Gea
who will substitute an injured Victor Valdés.
It's not the first time United's goalkeeper has been called
up by Del Bosque. The coach also gave him the nod in May 2010 for the 30-man
preliminary squad he released for the World Cup in South Africa. On that occasion he
didn't make it to the final squad. In 2012, he was called up for two friendlies
(against Serbia and South Korea).
Del Bosque has been breaking him into the Spain squad
gradually but the time has come for him to take the final leap. De Gea is the
natural choice to defend Spain’s
goal. Casillas will still be the starting keeper but the experience of
traveling to the World Cup tournament in Brazil will help De Gea grow
professionally.
A few days ago he was named best player of the season at
Manchester United. It was Sir Alex Ferguson who originally signed him at the
Premier League club.
