Novak Djokovic beats Tomas Berdych at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals
NOVAK Djokovic has clinched the season-ending world No 1
ranking, ensuring the Serb the Australian Open’s top seeding in January.
Djokovic, 27, extended his unbeaten indoors winning streak to 30
matches with a 6-2 6-2 demolition of Czech Tomas Berdych at the Barclays
ATP World Tour Finals at the O2.The victory guaranteed Djokovic the No 1 ranking until at least the January 19-February 1 Melbourne Park grand slam, regardless of what happens for the rest of this tournament.
Jubilant on securing victory, Djokovic celebrated with his support group, led by Boris Becker as his emotions bubbled over.
“This is an amazing feeling,” Djokovic said. “It has been an incredible year.”
The Wimbledon champion joins an illustrious group to have finish the season as No 1 since computer rankings were introduced in 1973.
Since then, only six other players — Pete Sampras (six times), Roger Federer (5), Jimmy Connors (5), Ivan Lendl (4), John McEnroe (4) and Rafael Nadal (3) — have achieved the feat
Djokovic’s annexing of the season-ending No 1 meant the mantle has been shared by only three players for the past 11 years — Djokovic, Federer and Nadal.
Federer will finish the year at No 2 but can close the gap — a sizeable 1310 points — by winning here and next week’s Davis Cup.
Djokovic is yet to drop at set at the O2, trouncing Group 1 rivals Stan Wawrinka, Marin Cilic and Berdych for the combined loss of just nine games.
Djokovic has not lost an indoors match since Paris 2012 and is unbeaten in all matches since his wife Jelena gave birth to the couple’s son Stefan on October 22.
The Serb will face Japan’s Kei Nishikori in today’s semi-finals.
Australian Open Wawrinka will qualify for the semi-finals if he beats US Open winner Cilic in the remaining round-robin match.
If Wawrinka advances, he will face compatriot Federer for a place in Sunday’s final.
The Swiss pair will combine next week in the Davis Cup final against France in Lille.
