Boxing:Petalcorin Looks For Manny Pacquiao Chance
AUSTRALIA’S newest world boxing champion Randy Petalcorin is hoping to make the first defence of his WBA Interim world light-flyweight title on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s next superfight.
Pacquiao defends his WBO welterweight crown against slick, undefeated Chris Algieri in Macau and Petalcorin’s promoter Peter Maniatis is working to get his Melbourne-based fighter a start on the same show.
Pacquiao was ringside to congratulate Petalcorin after the 22-year-old Filipino stopped Panama’s Walter Tello in the seventh round in Shanghai, China last week.
His two fights before winning the world title were held in Melbourne.
He has an outstanding record with 22 wins (17 by KOs) and a draw in 24 pro fights stretching back to 2009 and fought for the world title as a registered boxer with Victoria’s Professional Boxing and Combat Sports Board.
Pacquiao and Petalcorin are both from General Santos City in the Philippines,
``Manny Pacquiao was very impressed with Randy in Shanghai,’’ Maniatis said. ``He was ringside along with his trainer Freddie Roach and his promoter Bob Arum.
``Everyone agreed that in Randy a new star has been born.’’
Petalcorin is a pocket rocket at 155cm and 49kg.
