The 15th edition of the
IPNX Police Rookies Basketball Championship was tipped off Monday at the Indoor
court of the Police
College, Ikeja Lagos with
twenty-six youth teams from across the country contending for honours. The
annual competition, which will end on December21, is featuring teams of
Under-14 to U-18 in the boys and girls categories.
Coordinator, Mark Balogun, a Deputy
Superintendent of Police disclosed that on one hand, the aim was to discover
budding players for the Police Baton Basketball team which features in the
Nigeria Premier League and on the other hand, to discover players for the
various junior national teams. Fixtures show that six teams are vying in the
U-14 boys category; eight in the U-16 young men while the U-18 category has
eight teams in the male and four in the female.
As at time of filing this report,
the organizers say with teams are still being expected from seven other states
namely Delta, Edo, Anambra, Abuja-the Federal Capital
Territory, Ogun, Oyo and Lagos.
