BRISBANE:Serena Stumles Into Quarters, Wozniacki Withdraws



SERENA Williams finished the calendar year today as she had reigned over women's tennis, dismissing German Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 6-4 to enter the Brisbane International quarter-finals.  Williams was notably anxious in the first eight games of the new season, but broke Petkovic's service game in the ninth for 5-4 when the German netted a forehand volley. The world No.1 was playing in what technically the first match of her 2014 season after a barnstorming 2013 in which she built a colossal 78-4 win-loss record, lifting the French and US Open crowns. And former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki has withdrawn from the Brisbane International citing right shoulder soreness.The Danish star said she'd recently been troubled by pain in her shoulder, particularly when serving, and was not ready to start her WTA season while the issue persisted.
