The Miami Heat star is the most searched-for athlete in nearly half of the U.S., including most of the southeast, excluding only Tennessee, where Peyton Manning played his college ball.
James can claim most of the northeast as well as several states out west. California, however, belongs to Kobe Bryant and Washington goes to Russell Wilson, the young quarterback that just brought the Seattle Seahawks a Super Bowl win.
Andrew Wiggins and Johnny Manziel are the only two amateur athletes on the map, with Wiggins claiming Kansas and Kentucky and the former Texas A&M quarterback laying claim to the Lonestar State. Both will be drafted to professional teams in the coming months.
Tiger Woods (Vermont) and Floyd Mayweather (Nevada) are the only two athletes on the map that don't play for one of the "big four" sports, however there are no baseball players or hockey players on the list.
While he isn't the most searched-for player in a single state, former Orlando Magic standout Dwight Howard is tied for 10th on the list of "most popular athletes."
The study also revealed that the NFL is by far the most popular sports league in the U.S., claiming 46 of the 50 states. Florida, Oklahoma and Oregon tied with the NFL and the NBA among the most popular leagues.
Quarterback was easily the most popular position in sports, according to search data, followed by three basketball positions -- point guard, small forward and shooting guard.
The Denver Broncos, Miami Heat, New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Penguins were the most popular teams in the "big four" sports, with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Milwaukee Bucks, San Diego Padres and Calgary Flames as the least popular teams.
