Eagles:Keshi Removed: Amodu, Ogunbote, Others Takes Over Team
Nigeri's coach, Stephen Keshi has been subtly removd as the coach of the
Super
Eagles after a spate of bad results in the on-going Africa
Cup of Nations qualifiers. Former Super Eagles coach Shuaibu Amodu is
the new coach. He had been was sacked alongside Keshi after the Mali
2002 Afcon, a move that stopped them from leading the team to the Korea/
Japan 2002 World Cup, Amodu, according to the Nigeria Football
Federation,will be assisted by Gbenga Ogunbote to
prosecute the remaining qualifying games away to Congo and home to South
Africa The former Togo coach who was handed the reigns in November 2011
and won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations was relieved off his duties on
Thursday morning despite leading Nigeria to a 3-1 win over Sudan hours
before the announcement. Nigeria lost 3-2 to Congo in Calabar and played
out a goalless draw with South Africa in Cape Town. A 1-0 reversal in
Khartoum last weekend which sent Nigeria to the bottom of the group
finally nailed Keshi’s coffin. The Nigeria Football Federation also
revealed that after the qualifiers, a foreign coach will be brought in
to tinker the Super Eagles. A statement released by the Executive
Committee of the NFF read thus “However, in the interest of Nigeria
football and the desire to ensure qualification for the 2015 Africa Cup
of Nations finals, the Committee decided to relieve them of their duties
with immediate effect. This will be Shuabu Amodu’s fourth stint at the
national team coach after taking charge in 1994, 2001 and in 2010.
Nigeria, with two games remaining-away in Congo and at home to South
Africa are third in Group A of the final round of qualifiers for the
2015 Afcon.By the same token, Samson Siasia was appointed the coach for
the Under-23 team and he will be assisted by Fatai Amoo.
