Perhaps they’ve headed the ball too many times or perhaps they were
never that bright to begin with, but some very well known players have
said some remarkably entertaining things about the game they love.
Here are some of our favourite dumb quotes:
Former England player and manager, Kevin Keegan: “They’re the second best team in the world, and there’s no higher praise than that.”
Former Manchester United captain, Bryan Robson: “If we played like this every week, we wouldn’t be so inconsistent.”
Former Liverpool and Newcastle United player, Barry Venison: “I always used to put my right boot on first, and then obviously my right sock.”
Former captain of the Netherlands national team, Ruud Gullit: “We must have had 99 per cent of the game. It was the other three per cent that cost us the match.”
Former Manchester City and West Ham United player, Steve Lomas: “Germany are a very difficult team to play ... they had 11 internationals out there today.”
Former England player and coach, Sir Bobby Robson: “We didn’t underestimate them. They were a lot better than we thought.”
Footballer and model David Beckham: “I definitely want Brooklyn to be christened, but I don’t know into what religion yet.”
Former Australian captain, Mark Viduka: “I would not be bothered if we lost every game as long as we won the league.”
Former Australian coach, Terry Venables: “If history is going to repeat itself I should think we can expect the same thing again.”
Former England player, Jamie Redknapp: “Will Chelsea qualify with ease? I think they will, but it won’t be easy.”
