The Nigeria University Games Association, NUGA has shortlisted 60 athletes for camping in preparation for the 28th World University Games in Gwangju, Korea , July 3 to 14.The athletes, who represent five sports- athletics, badminton, judo, taekwondo and table tennis were selected at the end of an open trial held at the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.
NUGA secretary Bola Orodole, told Sports
Vanguard in an interview that 60 is projected to make the trip. “However funds
will guide our final decision on the number of athletes but the camping
exercise will last till end of June.
Besides, he
disclosed that notable Nigerians in foreign institutions of higher learning are
short-listed. “Athletes in higher
institutions abroad came into the picture hinged on advice by national
federations who provided technical assistance during the open trials. They gave
us their records and we are in contact with them.”
Asked if the
association has secured the necessary funds to attend the games, Orodole said a
letter had been written to the Federal Ministry of Education asking for
assistance, noting that “we are hopeful of getting a favorable response from
the Ministry. We have put the number of athletes that will make the trip at 50
to 55 or 60 if we have enough funds to take that number.
