Bassey keen to add goals to his game

Enyimba’s Ezekiel Bassey has been a revelation in his first season in Aba, dazzling with his willingness to take on defenders and his wide deliveries. These performances earned him a call-up as part of a contingent of 23 to the national team.
“I had a great experience at the Super Eagles camp,” Bassey smiles. “I had some orientation as to what to expect before going, so the reality was not as much of a shock to me.”
He may have had an inkling, but the international scene is quite a step up from club football. National team handler Sunday Oliseh eventually whittled down the list to six, and while he did not make the final cut, Bassey is taking it all in stride.
“In the end, I just believe the timing wasn’t exactly right.”
In spite of the rave reviews earned this term, he remains aware there are elements to his game he must hone in order to be ready when another opportunity presents itself. The former Akwa United man has scored only twice in the NPFL; for someone who regularly gets into the final third with his dribbling ability, there is plenty of room for improvement—something he readily acknowledges.
“I think that, in order to become a complete player, I need to improve my goalscoring ability,” he agrees. “Also, my technique also has to be better.”
In the meantime though, there is plenty to admire about Bassey’s abilities as is. Often the bright spark as Enyimba bid for a seventh league title, he remains adamant that the Peoples’ Elephant will justify the ‘favourites’ tag and see off the challenge of Sunshine Stars and Warri Wolves.

“We will win the league title this season,” this with a steely look of determination in his eye. “We have the quality of champions, and the spirit within the squad is high.”
