Former
national team players, Christian Chukwu and Bright Omokaro have cautioned
Nigerians against looking down on any of the Super Eagles’ Brazil 2014 World
Cup group- F opponents, warning
that no team should be taken for granted
in the World Cup proper.
Chukwu,
a former captain and coach of the Eagles said recent reactions to the draw was
not in the country’s interest. “from what Nigerians have said, it could spell
doom, if the players are made to belief it is going to be easy and do not take
the group games serious.”
The
draws last Friday pitched the Super Eagles alongside Argentina,
who are winners in 1978 and 1986, Bosnia Hezegovina, and Iran, prompting most Nigerian football fans to
believe it is going to be an easy one for Nigeria
to scale through the group stage with Argentina.
Chukwu
said rather that the group could turn out to be one of the toughest groups
going by the fact that every team earned it’s place in the final and would
attempt to make a lasting impression in Brazil.
According
to him, “the fact that Bosnia Herzegovina is featuring at the World Cup for the
first, does not make their team a weaker one. The Eagles must fight, if they
must qualify from the group,” he stated.
‘’If
you ask me, I will say ours is not a simple group. Yes Iran and Bosnia are not noted as football
playing nations, but having qualified for the World Cup, they would want to
prove bookmakers wrong as to what they are capable of doing.
‘’The
Super Eagles must not be carried away. They should prepare adequately for the
championship. What should be done now is for the administrators to organise
grade A international friendly matches for the team so that they would blend,
understand themselves and be able to conquer not only their group opponents but
the world’’, he stated.
Speaking in
the same vein, the Eagles left back defender, Bright Omokaro believes the Super
Eagles have what it takes to leave lasting imprints at the Mundiale, but warned that the players should
not dismiss the other group opponents with a wave of the hand, adding that
there is no simple group at the World Cup.
‘’Every
team that comes to the World Cup is a potential winner, so we must not under
rate any team in our group, rather we should prepare very well so that we can
overcome any team that comes our way,” he added.
