Former WBC Super Featherweight champion, Azumah Nelson has expressed disatisfaction not to have become the first Ghanaian to win an
Olympic medal during his illustrious boxing career.
As an amateur, Azumah won most titles
in the sport except in the Olympics , as Ghana boycotted the 1980 Games
in Moscow when he was in top form.
Azumah won the medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and secured
the WBC Featherweight and Super Featherweight World titles later.
“I feel so bad, very bad because I wanted to set all the records in
boxing. I was the Ghana champion and I became African champion, I became
Commonwealth champion and then I became World champion. I am talking
about professional”, Azumah said.
“At amateur level, I couldn’t get to the Olympic Games and we were
preparing for the Olympic Games at that time. Because of South Africa
(apartheid) we boycotted the Games and we couldn’t go to the Olympics.
Nobody has won an Olympic gold medal and that was my dream but God said
no,” Azumah Nelson revealed to an Accra based radio station.
