World No.310 player Darian King has been defaulted from a Challenger
tournament in Virginia for hitting a lineswoman by throwing his racquet.
The disgusting incident came during an explosion of anger as King lost a
key point, with the racquet blow leaving the official lying on the
ground in pain for several minutes.
After losing a tiebreak point
in a first round match against Edmund Corrie at the Charlottesville
Challenger, King, 22, blew up and threw his racquet at a tarpaulin
surrounding the court. It ricocheted off the tarp and hit the back of
the lineswoman, who cried out fell to the ground.
The incident left match commentators stunned.
“Wow. Oh no. I
think we’re done,” the lead commentator said, when the incident occurred
with King down a set and trailing 4-2 in the second set tiebreak. “Yep,
boy, that is just brutal.”
As the commentator forecast, King was
rapidly defaulted from the match - yet after briefly showing interest in
her welfare, he incredibly tried to plead his case, saying repeatedly
to the umpire: “I didn’t hit her.”
