Silvio Berlusconi
wants to make his last major mark on AC Milan before the club ends up in the
hands of Thai businessman Mr Bee. The ex-prime minister of Italy wants to bow
out on a high note, and so, as MARCA exclusively revealed, he wants Carlo
Ancelotti.
The long-time AC Milan president is
still ready for anything, and that includes the idea of getting the current
Real Madrid manager to sit on the bench at the San Siro. He knows that if
Ancelotti returns, the business and financial regeneration of the 'Rossoneri',
which has begun with the wheels being set in motion for the sale of a stake in
the club, will be completed in a sporting sense. In order to persuade
Ancelotti, Berlusconi and his new business partners will be putting on the
table a five-year contract, offering more money than what he earns at Real
Madrid and with the right to build a squad according to whatever footballing
criteria he deems suitable.
The aim is to recover popular
support and restore the good name of a club to which the doors of European
competition seem closed. To bring this about, AC Milan are prepared to spend
€150 million on strengthening the side.
According to the Gazzetta dello
Sport, Berlusconi has placed himself at the head of this operation, calling
Ancelotti in a desperate attempt to persuade him to return to his homeland and
to his old club. In fact Ancelotti had it in mind, after his contract at Real
Madrid ended, to go back to England and the Premier League, specifically to
Manchester United. His return to Italy was on the back burner, but now
Berlusconi's interest might make him change his priorities.
